Introduction:
SFVol INIT is a little utility which adds a pop up menu to the so called ╥Standard File╙ (the ones you see when you select Open╔ or Save As╔ from applications and desk accessories) dialog boxes. This pop up menu allows you to switch to any other online volume instantly and to create new folders.
Once upon a time there was a nice little INIT called QuickFolder by Mark Ingra. It added a button to the Save As╔ dialog boxes which allowed you to create a new folder. I decided that a similar function was needed within my compression/encryption/archival utility, StuffIt. However, I prefer one solution to be universal across all applications. So I contacted Mr. Ingra and asked if he╒d be interested in allowing me to include his INIT. His answer was that he already sold the rights to it to a distributor. So, I decided to write my own. To avoid possible legal problems, I decided on the pop up menu instead of the extra button. This has the added advantage of being compatible with applications like PageMaker 3.0, which partially obscures QuickFolder╒s button. I must take this opportunity to give Mark Ingra credit for the original implementation.
You may ask, what does SFVol INIT have anything to do with StuffIt? Well, I already mentioned the history, but there╒s another reason. I do not know what I can bundle SFVol INIT with. It╒s too simple (although very useful) to stand on its own. Since I happened to have an assortment of StuffIt Utilities, I decided to include it in that.
Installation/Usage:
To install it, drop it into the System folder of any startup disk and reboot.
To activate the pop up menu, you must click and hold down the mouse button over the part where the volume name is displayed. This is usually right above the ╥Eject╙ button. The pop up menu basically has 2 choices and a list of online volumes. The two choices are New Folder╔ and About╔
Operations:
Selecting one of the volumes from the menu will switch over to the root level of that volume.
Selecting New Folder╔ allows you to create a new folder in the current folder. When you select New Folder╔, you will be asked to type in a name for the new folder. There is also a checkbox titled ╥Enter Folder╙. If this option is checked (default), you will be brought into the newly created folder. If it is unchecked, you will be left where you were before. After typing in a name for the folder, click New or press return. If you change your mind and do not want to create a new folder, click Cancel or type a command-period.
Selecting About╔ displays some information about the utility and the author.
If you DO NOT SELECT ANY ITEM, you will be moved one level up. This duplicates the functionality of the original volume name ╥button╙.

Future changes:
My Welcome to Macintosh screen is cluttered enough as it stands. I don╒t intend to add an icon to it for SFVol INIT. (And I don╒t want to go through the hassle of including an option to shut it off.) If you want an icon, add one in with ResEdit and include the ShowINIT resource code.
